A non-parametric estimation of directional wave spectrum is presented here based on the Bayesian modeling and introducing two hyperparameters so that the wave spectrum is smoothed in frequency and direction. The paper presents a systematic set of estimations based on numerical simulations of ship responses, sailing with constant speed in different wave conditions, i.e. head and following seas. It also includes comparisons with full-scale estimations collected onboard of a frigate. Comparisons with free sea surface elevations records by onboard wave radar are also addressed, and the results obtained are found to be reasonable.
