The ultimate strength of ship hulls under vertical bending moment is an important item of information required to design primary structure. In addition, initial geometric imperfections in plates between stiffeners can significantly affect the ultimate strength. In this paper, the influence of initial geometric imperfections modes on the ultimate strength of a ship’s hull is studied. A numerical model of a hold compartment at amidship of a Suezmax tanker was developed using a finite element program considering both geometric and material nonlinearity. The analyses were conducted for the hogging condition, which was obtained by rotation increments. Different imperfection modes on the bottom and inner bottom plates were considered in the model. Two cases have been studied: in the first case, a half wave in the longitudinal and transversal directions; and in second case, the imperfection mode coincident with the main natural buckling mode of the bottom panel. Ultimate strength of the ship hull was analyzed to both cases and compared with the results obtained from DNV formulations.
