Lavrov, A., Rodrigues, J.M., Gadelho, J.F.M. e Guedes Soares, C. (2017), “Calculation of hydrodynamic coefficients of ship sections in roll motion using Navier-Stokes equations”, Ocean Engineering, Vol. 133, pp. 36-46

The flow in the vicinity of 2D ship sections carrying out forced roll motions is simulated using the solution to the Navier-Stokes equations implemented in OpenFOAM. A hybrid Lagrangian-Eulerian adaptive mesh scheme is applied to work out the problem of the moving body and that of the free surface interface tracking. Three sections of a containership, with differing geometrical properties, are investigated and the obtained hydrodynamic coefficients are compared with those from the application of a potential flow code. In addition, the case study of a rectangular section is considered and the method implemented is validated by matching the calculations to experimental data. The influence of viscosity, particularly on vortex creation, on the roll motion is investigated for an array of oscillation frequencies.
