This paper presents an 11-year hindcast system to study the wave power potential at the pilot zones Aguçadoura and São Pedro de Moel in Portugal. The system implemented uses two spectral wave models with nested grids. The first one is WAVEWATCH III, which covers almost the entire north Atlantic basin to account for the wave generation, and the second one is SWAN for wave transformation at coastal areas. The spectral outputs from WAVEWATCH III give the boundary conditions for the first area of SWAN, which makes the connection between the ocean and coastal areas, whose outputs gives the boundary conditions for the high resolution areas. The wind fields input for both models were obtained from the Era-Interim data base. The wave power is calculated using the energy transport components, modeled by SWAN, and an energy resource assessment was done. The seasonal, inter-annual and total period averaged spatial distribution, for both areas, are presented.
