Sobral, J. e Guedes Soares, C. (2016), “Fire risk assessment for ship compartments”, MMaritime Technology and Engineering 3, Guedes Soares, C. & Santos T. A., (Eds.), Taylor & Francis Group, London, UK, pp. 895-902

The present paper deals with fire safety based on its importance. Usually, for most activities there is a concern about the impact in people integrity, property loss and business interruption or even on environmental damage. In this case the study relies on ships, as special infrastructures that require a careful attention to this type of event. Thus, concerning the occurrence of a fire in a ship it is important to have the perception of its risky zones. The methodology proposed in this paper includes the analysis of some important factors as the criticality of each compartment for ship survival, the probability of an ignition source, the amount and type of fuel load inside the compartment, as well as the fire detection and alarm systems, the extinguishing systems (manual and automatic), the compartment occupancy, the compartment boundaries (fire resistance) or the human competencies to deal with a fire (training and organization procedures). At the end, it is possible to know where the compartments with higher risk are located and where are safer zones in the ship, concerning a fire event. Keywords: fire, risk, compartment, ship.
