An experimental falling weight impact test has been performed to examine the plastic response and failure of a clamped square steel plate struck laterally by a rigid hemispherical indenter. For the impacted plate scaled from ship shell plating, the respective span length and plate thickness are 1000 mm and 4 mm. The impact weight and velocity of striker are 1350 kg and 6.2 m/s, respectively. The experimental results show good agreement with the simulations performed by the Abaqus finite element solver. The simulations aim at proposing techniques for defining the material characteristics in the numerical models that analyse the large plastic deformation and failure of ship structural components subjected to impact loading. The strain hardening and the strain rate sensitivity of material are defined on the basis of experimental data of quasi-static and high-speed tension tests. The critical failure strain is estimated by tensile test simulations. Finally, more numerical simulations are performed to evaluate the strain rate effects, comparing with the current experimental and numerical results.
