An application of the polynomial chaos expansion technique in the stochastic analysis of plate elements under lateral pressure is presented. An adaptive non-intrusive technique based on regression is adopted to define sparse polynomial chaos expansion representations. The analysis is performed considering as response quantity of interest the maximum deflection of a steel rectangular plate element under lateral pressure representative of a ship bottom plate element. The material modulus of elasticity is considered to be a spatially varying property represented by a random field. The plate numerical model is based on the classical theory of thin plates, which is solved numerically using the element free Galerkin method. The accuracy and efficiency of the adaptive non-intrusive sparse polynomial chaos expansion technique adopted is demonstrated in the paper for different correlation lengths of the random field.
