A simplified method that combines the EulerBernoulli beam theory for structural vibration and Wagner’s theory for hydrodynamic loading is presented to study the hydroelastic vibration of bottom plating subjected to wave impact. The simplified method is based on the assumption that the structural deformation does not affect the loading on the wetted surface of the structure. Analytical models derived from velocity potential are used for prediction of the hydrodynamic pressure on a rigid body, and the structural responses under the impulse load are calculated by mode superposition method. The slamming pressures obtained from the velocity potential which is solved as in Wagner’s theory, are applied on the finite element model, to predict the transient structural responses as well. The analytical results and numerical predictions of structural responses are compared.
