A multi-objective genetic algorithm for ship route optimization which includes the model of ship response at sea, the integration of an operative weather forecast system and a ranking method for user control will be briefly described. The paper mainly focuses on the sensitivity analysis aimed at studying the influence of different parameters, e.g. sea-keeping criteria or user preferences, and optimization settings, such as the number of iterations, on the resulting route, assessing their influence on the accuracy, but also on the computational effort required. A test case will be identified in the route of an ocean-going cargo vessel crossing the North Atlantic in a real forecasted weather scenario.
