Understanding the marine environment is of crucial importance for a number of applications, in particular extreme events like storms have a major impact on coastal populations and ecosystems. For the characterization of the situations of extreme storms, it is usual to use an Eulerian approach in which only assess the local conditions of waves, however, a Lagrangean approach the same phenomenon can be achieved monitoring the characteristics of each storm during its lifetime. In the present work, a Lagrangean methodology was applied to 35 years of the Era-interim reanalysis significant wave height data, from 1979 to 201, over the North Atlantic basin. A statistical analysis of storm frequency and of different storm characteristics as maximum significant wave height in the track, storm area associated to the maximum significant wave height, storm life time, maximum area in the track, length of the track, was performed. Trends were investigated both at annual and seasonal time scales. Finally, the relation between storminess in this region and the North Atlantic Oscillation index was investigated.
