In the present work a comparison of some data assimilation methods considered to improve the wave predictions close to the Portuguese continental coast is presented. The SWAN (Simulating Waves Nearshore) simulation results produced by the wave modeling system implemented are used. The simplest procedures are based on the successive correction algorithms. The assimilation of the buoy data is performed as a post-processing implementation in time and the algorithm is applied directly to the predicted parameter (significant wave height or mean wave period). These methods consist in performing corrections based on the linear regression, the systematic error or the Kalman filter. Another method implemented in the western Iberian coast is based on the optimal interpolation method. In this case, altimeter data are assimilated and the correction is applied only for the significant wave height. The results show that the data assimilation techniques increase significantly the reliability of the wave predictions.
