In this paper a three years study of the wave energy in the Iberian North and West coast is presented, based on the results produced by a high resolution numerical wave model. The implemented system uses two models for wave predictions, the first one is the WAVEWATCH III model for wave generation, that covers the entire North Atlantic basin, and the second the SWAN model (Simulating WAves Nearshore) for wave propagation in coastal areas. WAVEWATCH III provides the wave boundary conditions for the areas simulated by SWAN, which in turn provides the boundary conditions for high resolution nested areas. The modelling of the Portuguese west coast and Spanish northwestern coast were conducted separately, but to have consistency of results between the two areas, both simulations are performed using the same parameterizations of the SWAN model. The wind fields used in both models are from Era-Interim, a global atmospheric reanalysis data set produced by the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts and the bathymetry used in high resolution areas are from GEBCO (The General Bathymetric Chart of the Oceans). Significant wave height, mean wave period and mean wave direction measured by buoys are the wave parameters used to validate the model’s outcome . An evaluation of the average wave power spatial distribution in the first domain of SWAN is done for each month of the three years, and for the high resolution areas the spatial distribution wave energy are examined for winter and summer.
