The NURBS based hull modelling system CadSHIP id described, together with the methodology for the design of a ship hull surface onwhich the system is based. The approach adopted starts from the knowledge of some of few main lines in basec geometric parameters and then applies different methods of surface generation and analysis. The main methods for surface generation and analysis used in the system are presented. A review is provided of NURBS main characteristics, highlighting those which make them an efficient replacement to the wireframe and surface models used so far in ship hull design.
