In the present study, the wave energy converter consisting of a single float, with three different shapes attached to a single platform is analysed. The Wavestar concept is used in order to design the reactive control, and a hydrodynamic model of the point absorber is combined with the dynamic power take-off system. The hydrodynamic model is based on the linear wave theory where model parameters are calculated using WAMIT. The control method referred to as the wave power extraction algorithm (WPEA) is applied to the full scale Wavestar prototype for different buoy shapes such as hemisphere, hemisphere-cylinder and cone-cylinder for maximizing energy extraction. The WPEA is optimized based on simulations of the point absorbers in different sea states. A simplified power take-off (PTO) is also added to the model, enabling the optimization of the WPEA to take into account the PTO constraints of PTO bandwidth and force limitations. The study is carried out to determine the effect of the change in shape of the buoy on the hydrodynamic properties and the average power absorption and a brief comparison of reactive control strategies for the different buoy shapes is also analysed.
