In the recent decades, the assessment of the performance of the offshore floating wind turbine is very important for proper design of the floater. In this paper, the long-term exceedance probability of the Morison wave load acts on the floating support structure of a semi-submersible wind turbine operated in the North Sea is studied with three different cases of wave heights. A MATLAB program was developed to assess the total transverse wave load acting on each member individually of the floating support structure by applying Morison’s equation for each specified wave heights condition. Airy wave theory is used to calculate the water kinematics in order to estimate the wave force acts on each member of the floating support structure. The distance between the wave starting point and the center line of the first column faced the wave at a heading angle equal to 0 degree is assumed to be 10 m. JONSWAP spectrum is calculated for each sea state combination in the scatter diagram of the North Sea. The selection of 70 frequencies was made in order to calculate the JONSWAP spectrum and the wave force spectrum which are used in the estimation of the long-term exceedance probability of the Morison wave load. The total wave force corresponds to each frequency is then calculated in order to investigate the members which is subjected to the largest wave-induced force expected to occur during the operational life time of the wind turbine. The results of the long-term assessment show a large deviation between the largest wave height assumed and the other wave height conditions.
