Santos, T.A. e Guedes Soares, C. (2015), “Economic assessment of LNG bunkering in the Portuguese coast”, Guedes Soares, C. Dejhalla R. and Pavletiæ D., (Eds.), Towards Green Marine Technology and Transport, Taylor & Francis Group, London, UK, pp. 695-704

The main aim of this paper is to assess the economic feasibility of providing a LNG bunkering service in EU core network ports in the Portuguese coast and Atlantic islands. This paper first presents a state of the art on LNG as marine fuel and different bunkering options, with special focus on small LNG tankers. The demand for LNG in Portuguese core network ports is then characterized using available forecasts. With this background, the first phase of a LNG bunkering network is evaluated, consisting of a small tanker based in Sines LNG import terminal and travelling to Lisbon and Leixões, but also to comprehensive network ports in Açores and Madeira, as required by ships calling in and requesting such bunkering. The capital, operating and voyage costs implied by this pattern of operation are evaluated and an investment analysis is carried out to determine the required freight rate which would allow the economic feasibility of this solution. Conclusions are drawn on the suitability of this solution and recommendations for further research are given.
