The objective of this work is to analyse the effect of structural damage on the ultimate load carrying capacity of a single hull damaged tanker ship subjected to asymmetrical bending loading. The analysis is performed by the nonlinear finite element method, where a single hull tanker is analysed in intact and damage scenarios. The position of the neutral axis at any step load is identified based on finite element analysis. The solutions, based on the progressive collapse analysis as defined by the International Association of Class Society and finite element method are similar in the intact case. The finite element method has been found to be good and practical tools to analyse damaged ship hull structures from the point of view of good modelling of the structural complexity of the damaged ship structures and convergences of the finite element solutions.
