The aim of the present work is to assess the residual strength of a box girder subjected to compressive load as a result of the pure bending moment and a non-propagating crack. As a consequence of the presence of corrosion and excessive loading, cracks may occur, leading to structural failure. A series of static nonlinear finite element analyses are performed, accounting for different crack sizes and locations. The effect of a crack presence on the ultimate bending moment, bending rigidity and modes of collapse are investigated. The effect of different initial imperfection shapes on the failure modes of the cracked corroded box girder is also studied.
