Asghari, M. e Fonseca, N. (2014), “Motion responses of a semi-submersible floating wind turbine in irregular waves”, Developments in Maritime Transportation and Exploitation of Sea Resources, Guedes Soares, C. and López Peña F. (Eds.). Francis & Taylor Group, Londres, UK, pp. 889-898

The paper presents an analysis of floating wind turbine motion responses in regular and irregular waves. The supporting structure is a semi-submersible consisting of a tri-column triangular platform with the wind turbine positioned in the geometric center. The floating structure is moored with a multi-catenary system. The wind turbine is the 5 MW NREL (National Renewable Energy Laboratory) reference systems. The aerodynamics of the wind turbine and the coupled dynamic response is calculated with the FAST freeware time domain code. The mooring system and floating structure hydrodynamic characteristics are pre-calculated by dedicated computer codes and the results used as input by FAST. Time domain simulations are carried out for several combinations of regular wave periods, wave heights and steady wind speeds to conclude on the steady state motion response characteristics. Afterwards the analysis is generalized for a number of sea states and wind conditions representative of the Portuguese West coast.
