The dynamics of port competition between the Hamburg-Le Havre and the Mediterranean port ranges is addressed with a systems approach. Causal relationships between variables are derived from pub-lished relevant literature and represented by means of causal loop diagrams. Given their appropriateness, a set of systems archetypes is used to explain the observed system’s behavior. Afterwards, the obtained causal loop diagram is translated into a set of ordinary differential equations from which a simulation model is construct-ed. The obtained model’s structure and simulation results show that the insertion of pure regional transship-ment hubs is not a fundamental or long-term solution to increase port range competitiveness. Instead, the pro-posed model supports the notion that long term improvement of market share can only be obtained through a port regionalization process, directly entwined with the development of hinterland accessibility and an in-crease in gateway traffic.
