Almeida, S., Rusu, L. e Guedes Soares, C. (2015), “Application of the Ensemble Kalman Filter to a high-resolution wave forecasting model for wave height forecast in coastal areas”, Maritime Technology and Engineering, Guedes Soares, C. & Santos T.A. (Eds.),Taylor & Francis Group, London, UK, pp. 1349-1354

In the present work two different approaches to the implementation of the Ensemble Kalman Filter (EnKF) in a wave modeling system SWAN (Simulating Waves Nearshore) were explored. Firstly, a new methodology was tested, in which the observations in the EnKF algorithm are replaced by the previously obtained analysis. The forecast is obtained with one time-step advance, showing a high improvement in the accuracy of wave height prediction, whereby technique may be applied to the guidance of ship movement in harbor areas. Secondly, an application of the filter to known past wave data, i.e. pairs of predictions and observations, results in an improvement of the statistical parameters. This represents in fact the beginning of a more theoretical study related to wave hindcast, for the filtered data corresponds to the best estimative of the underlying state of the system and its use in past wave reconstruction may now be explored.
