This paper describes a framework for Crew-Centred Design aimed at improving the human factors integration into the design process. Although the framework could be applied by any end-user or stakeholder particular emphasis is given to ship designers and naval architects. This emphasis can be justified by the fact that equipment manufactures and designers already have to take into account several of the human factors aspects, namely ergonomics and human machine interface, whereas there is an identified lack of a holistic approach to the overall ship design (integration of developed equipment, habitability, etc.). The framework applies to a large part of the ship life cycle, i.e., from the user requirements until the implementation process (i.e. construction and operation) and follows, in a sense, the IMO’s risk-based framework “Formal Safety Assessment (FSA)”. The proposed framework is based on the application of the Failure Mode and Effect Analysis (FMEA) method to the different phases of the ship life cycle. In order to illustrate the applicability of the proposed framework a particular activity of a given scenario is analysed.
