The paper presents an analysis of the energy released during various collision scenarios that involve a tug boat (striking ship) and a tanker vessel (struck ship) in harbour areas. The scenarios include different impact locations, incident angles and velocities, among others. The energy loss is estimated with analytical expressions that have been used to evaluate the external dynamics of ship-to-ship collisions. The calculations indicate that the collision location, along the length of the struck ship, has a negligible effect on the energy released since the displacement of the ships differs considerably and, thereby, the external dynamics could be disregarded. However, the incident angle of the striking ship continues influencing the collision response. In addition, it is proposed the use of quasi-static finite element simulations of tanker side panels, struck and locally damaged by a rigid indenter, to estimate the energy released during tug-to-tanker collisions. Later, this information can evaluate critical parameters, such as the impact velocity of the striking ship, by the use of the analytical expressions that evaluate the external dynamics.
