Almeida, T., Baptista, J. e Quaresma Dias, J. (2013), “An approach to OHS risk assessment in seaports”, International Congress on Safety and Labour Market, 8-9 May, Covilhã, Portugal

This work shows that despite the variety of risk assessment methods available, that can be used together or separately, to determine occupational risk assessment on different activities of port work, a practical and validated method would become a valuable tool to use in an occupational health & safety (OHS) approach to different port scenarios. The fact that port work has some specificity may represent a limitation to the use of a method initially designed for other economical activities, particularly SME’s. Some constraints may in fact occur, but still it is possible to use the same method for the most probable scenarios found at port work. Before applying the method that integrates environmental and occupational risks, it is necessary to define the variables and its ranges, so that the scenarios to be studied will be defined. This will guarantee comparable results of different ports. When applying the method, a selection of aspects to consider in risk assessment allows eliminating the ones that can lead to misled results of risk level. As a final remark it is also emphasised the importance of an occupational risk assessment model of direct use for workers and experts simultaneously.
