This study aims to determine the offshore wind energy potential for the coasts of Portugal and Galicia using the mesoscale atmospheric model WRF. The model is used to generate winds at the turbine hub height of 80m height in order to calculate the offshore wind potential at the two locations. Wind data obtained from the model for the period 20092011 is validated against local measurements at 10m and 80m height obtained from meteorological stations located in both areas. Afterwards the model is used to produce results for three years, which can be used to determine whether those areas are suitable for wind energy development. Using a floating turbine model, the generated power that could be extracted by a turbine installed in these areas is calculated, as well the yearly number of hours at full power that the turbines would work. A detailed analysis of the wind regime is performed in terms of mean wind speed at 80m height. This way the two areas are compared and each region is characterized by its wind turbine development potential. The results show that both Portuguese coast and Galicia offer favorable wind conditions for the development of offshore wind parks.
