Five different interval estimation methods of extreme wave height based on the maximum entropy distribution are considered and compared theoretically. They are Woodruff’s method (WM), maximum likelihood method (MLM), sample quantile asymptotic method (SQAM), order statistic method (OSM), and sign test method (STM). The first three are parametric methods, and the other two are non-parametric methods. Since the extreme wave height might be fitted by a certain maximum entropy distribtuion, numerical simulation of the above interval estimation methods of 100-year return period based on random numbers of a maximum entropy distribution in different sample size is done firstly. This simulation results show that parametric methods are generally better than non-parametric methods. Finally, an example verification which uses the extreme wave height from Weizhou island in South China Sea is conducted. It indicates that MLM gives the best interval estimation for this actual data.
