Guedes Soares, C. (2012), “Challenges in Manoeuvring and Control of Ships in Waves”, Seakeeping and Manoeuvring in Waves, C. Guedes Soares (ed), University of Rijeka, pp. 406-447

The issues related to the prediction and simulation of ship manoeuvring at sea are discussed. The ability to predict manoeuvres in moderate and heavy seas requires extension of most common manoeuvring models to include the effect of waves which are accounted for in seakeeping models. Possibilities of constructing simple and fast mathematical models fusing manoeuvring and seakeeping methods are discussed. The simplified models should be capable to predict appropriately such nonlinear phenomena as loss of control in waves, parametric resonance and capsizing which implies applicability to very hard manoeuvres that can be caused by external forces. The possibilities that computational fluid dynamics can offer to deal with those problems will be addressed. Furthermore, the possibility of adopting motion control devices and ship stabilization to avoid loss of control will be discussed.
