The present report addresses the subject of extreme wave-induced hull girder loading on a ship during its operational lifetime. Ships in unrestricted service will inevitably encounter severe sea states even when the current improvement in weather routing systems is taken into account. Therefore, non-linear hydrodynamic effects must be accounted for in the prediction of extreme wave loading. This complicates very much the calculations as regards the hydrodynamics and the stochastic procedures to be applied. Whereas linear extreme hydrodynamic loads in stochastic seaways are easily determined by linear potential theory in the frequency domain and exact peak value distributions for Gaussian processes, the non-linear methods must in general rely on time-domain simulations and asymptotic extreme value distributions. The results obtained strongly depend on the quality of the time series derived, both in terms of the accuracy of the wave load calculation and in the selection of the random ocean wave pattern. The Committee cannot identify a single procedure solving all these problems but rather outline various proposals with respect to effectiveness and accuracy.
