The paper describes the efforts done in establishing a deep water prediction capability for the Portuguese waters and in complementing it in waters of decreasing depth approaching coast. Hindcasts have been made of the wave conditions in the shallow water areas up to the entrance of major ports in the Portuguese Coast, using as boundary conditions the wave fields provided by large scale WAM hindcasts. The emphasis of this work has been on the transformation area in which the finite depth effects start becoming important. The simulations have been made with the SWAN model. A special attention was paid in this work to the reconstruction of the highest energetic cases for validation of the methodology and modelling. A good agreement was observed between the measured and simulated parameters.
