This paper aims at reviewing work that has been performed on the topic of probabilistic assessment of ship structural reliability. The review starts by referring to the probabilistic models of the ship strength and of the still-water and wave induced loads that have been adopted in the reliability assessment of ships. Then, it presents the reliability formulations and several applications of the structural reliability methods on the assessment of the implicit safety levels of different ship structures and on the calibration of design formats where a consistent reliability level is required. This work concentrates on the ultimate longitudinal strength of the ship hull girder and does not deal with the fatigue reliability case, which is generally considered a serviceability limit state and is studied in connection with maintenance and inspection planning. Although this paper presents an overview on the topic of ship structural reliability, the review is mainly focused on the contribution of the authors to the developments in this area and, therefore, it does not claim to be an extensive general bibliographic review of the subject matter.
