This report deals with the loads on marine structures as indicated in its mandate. It is organised in 5 main chapters that follow the earlier tradition to consider wave loads on ships and on offshore structures, hydrodynamic impact loads, wind and current loads terminating with the probabilistic models that are often used as a basis to set the design values. In writing the report, boundaries were identified with other Committees and overlap was avoided. Examples are the choice of the wave scatter diagram for the long-term distributions of wave induced loads which was not discussed leaving this for Committee I.1 on Environment. The wave induced loads and partially the hydrodynamic impact loads on fast ships was left for the specialist Panel V.3 Structural Design of High Speed Vessels; Vibratory loads were left for Committee II.2 Dynamic Response and ice loads are covered by Panel V.5 Ice/Structure Interaction. This Committee was particularly active in performing comparative studies which have benefited from the kind of co-operation of several institutions, to which we would like to express our appreciation for their contribution. Four major studies were conducted on time simulation of non-linear ship motions, on damping of mooring lines, on sloshing loads and on long-term wave induced loads. More limited studies on impact loads (not reported here) and on wind and current loads were also performed. It is planned to present the full account of these studies in the Marine Structures Journal. In general, the Committee has been constrained to be very brief in their account of the work performed and even selective on the references chosen because of space limitations. These limitations, while forcing the Committee to be more selective and critical in what is presented also have the drawback of forcing some information not to be reported, which could be of interest to sectors of the readership. We hope however to have reached a balance between these conflicting requirements.
