Nava, V., Rajic, M. e Guedes Soares, C. (2012), “Effects of Water Depth on the Dynamics of a Moored Buoy under Irregular Waves”, 20th Symposium on Theory and Practice of Shipbuilding (SORTA 2012), 27-29 Setembro, Zagreb, Croácia

The aim of this paper is to study the influence of the mooring line characteristics, on the dynamics of a floating body with characteristics comparable to point absorber wave energy converters. For this purpose, effects of the water depth on the dynamics of a moored buoy for are investigated. The motions of a two-dimensional spherical buoy are studied under the action of irregular unidirectional waves. The restoring forces needed to keep buoy into station are provided by a mooring line under the action of only its own weight, modelled by a quasistatic approach. The mooring line is allowed to be taut or slack and tensions along the cable are determined by means of analytical solutions for inextensible cables. Numerical methods are then used to obtain forces and cable properties under any displaced condition. Monte- Carlo simulations of random forces have been carried out, and analysis in time and frequency domains have been performed in deep and intermediate waters. Finally results in terms of statistics of the motion of the buoy and tensions at the top of the mooring line have been obtained and compared.
