Fonfach, J.M.A., Sutulo, S. e Guedes Soares, C. (2011), “Numerical study of ship-to-ship interaction forces on the basis of various flow models”, Manoeuvring in Shallow & Coastal Waters (MSCW 2011), 18-20 Maio, Trondheim, Noruega

A comparative CFD study of the interaction between a smaller tug boat and a large tanker sailing parallel at low speed was undertaken on the basis of four flow models: (1) double-body inviscid flow; (2) double-body turbulent viscous flow; (3) inviscid free-surface flow, and (4) viscous free-surface flow. Two commercial CFD codes: Star CCM+ and ANSYS CFX were used for computations. Special attention was given to generation of the computational mesh inside the gap between the both vessels. Computations were carried out at various lateral distances and partly compared with available experimental data. Analysis of numerical results revealed a relatively weak influence of viscosity while free-surface effects are changing dramatically the character of the interaction at small lateral distances even at very low values of the Froude number based on the ship length while the Froude number based on the lateral distance becomes more informative in the case of side-by-side motion.
