This paper reviews briefly the development of the traditional method for ship subdivision and of the deterministic damage stability method. The main shortcomings of these methods, which caused the development of the probabilistic damage stability method, are identified. The theoretical foundations for the probabilistic method are explained, starting with reference to the meaning of the attained subdivision index. The methodologies for calculating the probabilities of flooding and survival are described, as well as the method used to derive the formula for the required subdivision index. The method employed to derive the formulae for calculating the probability of flooding taking in consideration the transverse, longitudinal and horizontal watertight subdivision, starting from damage statistics, is explained. Similarly the method employed to obtain formulae for the probability of survival, based on model test results, is described. The relationship of damaged survivability with sea state is also explained. Special consideration is given to the so-called “harmonized” regulations, pointing out the innovative aspects in relation to previous probabilistic regulations. Finally, reference is made to the conclusions of some case studies carried out to assess the impact of the new regulations in ship design.
