An uncertainty analysis of extreme still-water and wave load effects in ships is presented, with the emphasis on the model uncertainty of the wave loads. Based on this analysis and the results of load combination studies, a consistent set of partial safety factors was derived, applying a simple 8-index. The new code format was calibrated to yield the same average safety level as the existing design methods.
