The effects of welding heat treatments are assessed, modelling the preheat and post heat influence on welding distortions and residual stresses. Different welding procedures are designed for butt welded plates and nonlinear finite element analyses of welding simulation and mechanical analyses are performed in order to predict the welding induced residual stresses and distortions. Comparison between different welding heat treatments in reducing the welding induced imperfections is discussed.
