When a high velocity structure impacts with a nearly incompressible fluid, high peaks pressures are created. This slam-induced load may lead to local and global damage on a hull structure. The prediction of hydrodynamic impact loads plays an important role in the design of reliable and cost/weight effective marine structures. Since the beginning of the research, it was clear that water impact is a complex phenomenon, the analysis of which requires reasonable simplifications, and no one can expect to obtain all details of the fluid flow caused by the impact. With different simplifications on the boundary conditions and geometrical nonlinearities, the ranges of applicability of the simplified methods are distinct. In this paper, fundamental formulations of the hydrodynamic impact of a body entering water are recalled. The applications of some simplified approaches on water impact problems of simple structures are reviewed and compared, together with numerical simulations, regarding to assessment of the hydrodynamic pressure and impact force on marine structures. Particular attention is paid to point out the advantages and disadvantages of these methods, and recommendations for further study.
