In this work a model for time domain simulation of damaged ship motions in still water is shortly described and used to access the importance of the transient asymmetric flooding in RoRo vessels. This model is then used in connection with an accurate numerical model of the subdivision of a RoRo ship. These models allow the time domain simulation of complex flooding situations and the comparison of the performance of different design solutions. The effects on the transient asymmetric flooding of the extension of damage, cross-flooding of double-bottoms and height of the centre of gravity are investigated. The influence of obstacle dimensions and flow coefficients in the heeling process time history are acessed. Different compartment lay-out and the use of side casings on the main vehicle deck is also studied. Based upon these numerical results several conclusions are drawn, namely, that a ship with a typical SOLAS damage in calm waters may capsize due to transient asymmetric flooding of symmetrical compartments.
