Ponce de Leon, S. e Guedes Soares, C. (2010), “The sheltering effect of the Balearic Islands in the hindcast wave field”, Ocean Engineering, Vol. 37, pp. 603-610

The sheltering effect of the Balearic Islands was studied for typical Mediterranean wave situations of Levant, Tramuntana and Mistral and for mild conditions such as the Garbí and Ponent winds. For this purpose, a third generation wave model was applied to the Mediterranean Sea. From the analysis it was concluded that in general the sheltered zone persists for short periods of time, in the order of 6 hours, possibly reaching a maximum of 12 hours. In the Mediterranean, due to the short fetches the sea states are mainly wind sea and thus the wave field behind the islands depends on the local wind. The studied effect depends mainly on the wind variability and on the magnitude of the wind speed. Different patterns of the sheltered area were found.
