Guedes Soares, C. and Garbatov, Y. (1998), “Reliability of Plate Elements Subjected to Compressive Loads and Accounting for Corrosion and Repair”, Structural Safety and Reliability, Shiraishi, Shinozuka & Wen (Eds.), A. A. Balkema, Japan, pp. 2013-2020

A formulation is presented for the assessment of the reliability of a plate element subjected to compressive loads, corrosion and maintenance actions. This paper will examine how the plate collapse strength will vary in time as a consequence of corrosion and associated plate renewal. In the presence of general corrosion, the plate thickness will depend mainly on that effect and this will be the random variable considered here to affect the net section. The collapse strength against compressive loading is described by a function of time and the resulting reliability is quantified. The sensitivity of the reliability estimates with respect to several parameters is also studied. The reliability is predicted by a time variant formulation and the effects of repair and maintenance actions in the reliability assessment are shown.
