A reliability formulation is proposed for thermally insulated fire walls subjected to a pool fire. The collapse temperatures of plates are determined with a non-linear finite element code that accounts for the elasto plastic behaviour and for the changes in material properties with temperature. the basic mechanisms that influence the shape of the flame of a pool fire are described and a first order second moment approach is presented to quantify the uncertainty of the heat loads and to describe the importance of the governing variables in the limit state function. The limit state functions is defined terms of steel temperature and the reliability index is determined by a time independent first order method. An example of the reliability analysis of a fire wall protected with insulation is provided.
