Prediction of forces and moments on hull form is essential to determine ship’s stability and maneuvering capabilities during voyage. The presented study provides a comparison among the non-dimensional lateral forces and yaw moments encountered by a ship in calm water and in waves. A very large crude carrier model, KVLCC2, is simulated with static drift motion using OpenFOAM, both in calm water and in waves. The calm water simulation results are compared with experimental data and linear hydrodynamic derivatives are derived from the results and are compared. Next, static drift simulations were performed in waves, with three different wave lengths, and the lateral force and yaw moment results were compared with calm water simulation results.
