Whether the main engine is controlled by keeping constant the engine speed, the torque, the brake power or the ship speed, variations on ship resistance, typically due to evolving environmental conditions, result in a different working points of the engine and, consequently, affect in different ways the fuel consumptions, emissions and duration of the navigation in a seaway. In this work, a qualitative analysis is conducted to evaluate the effects of the different control strategies and some examples are performed providing some quantitative assessment by considering two different ships and properly modelling their behaviour in a seaway and their main engine performance.
