Santos, T.A. and Guedes Soares, C. (2018), “Methodology for the identification of the potential hinterland of container terminals”, Maritime Transportation and Harvesting of Sea Resources, Guedes Soares, C. & Teixeira A.P. (Eds.), Taylor & Francis Group, London, UK, pp. 157-166

A methodology is presented for determining the hinterland of container terminals, which takes in consideration the geography of the road and rail networks, the presence and location of intermodal terminals and seaport terminals. Unimodal and intermodal freight transportation solutions are considered in the calculation of the total transportation and handling costs across the geographic region surrounding the terminals. Costs comprise road haulage from load centers to ports, rail transportation in intermodal cases and handling of containers in intermodal and seaport terminals. An application of this methodology to the multi-port system in Southern Portugal is carried out, allowing the identification of hinterlands and competition margins for the different container terminals.
