This paper discusses the estimation of calm water and wave resistance properties of a ferry ship model using the open source toolkit, OpenFOAM. In the calm water test, resistance, sinkage and trim values were predicted together with mesh dependency analysis and compared with experimental data. For resistance in head sea, short wave cases were simulated with 6 degrees of freedom (DOF) of motion and compared with experimental data. Overall the results well capture the trend, however fails to predict the values with accuracy. The paper concludes that the solver still has some shortcomings regarding wave simulation with free motions.
