A new reanalysis data set (ERA20C) was recently made available from the ECMWF. The data set extends from the beginning of the 20th century until the first decade of the 21st century, making it possible to evaluate the long term changes in climate during the last century. Wind and wave data were obtained for a location off the Portuguese coast and a comparison between ERA-interim data (usually used in climate and climate change studies) and ERA20C was performed. Changes in marine climate were evaluated, investigating significant wave height, swell and wind magnitude at annual and season scales. The available data was divided into different periods, each one covering a sufficient number of years to compute climate statistics and a comparison of the marine climate in the different periods was made in terms of mean, and extreme annual values. Long term trends in annual characteristics were also assessed.
