(2010), “Reliability assessment of intact and damaged ship structures”, Advanced Ship Design for Pollution Prevention - Ship Structural Reliability with Respect to Ultimate Strength, Guedes Soares, C. and Parunov, J. (Eds.), Taylor & Francis Group, London, UK, pp. 79-93

This paper reviews the approaches that have been adopted to assess the implicit safety levels of intact and damaged ships and presents some results of the reliability analysis of damaged tank¬ers due to grounding and collision events. The paper starts by reviewing recent work published on the reliability of intact and damaged ships and presents the relevant considerations that should be addressed when formulating the reliability problem of damaged ships. Particularly, the effect of the damage on the ship ultimate strength and the relevant changes on the still water and wave induced loads following dam¬age, including the environmental conditions and duration of exposure that are applicable for the damaged ship, are discussed.
