Hussein, A.W. and Guedes Soares, C. (2008), “Design Equation for the Ultimate Capacity of Intact and Grounded Double Hull Tankers Designed According to the Common Structural Rules”, Proceedings of the TEAM 2008, Ergin, A. (Editor), Istanbul, Turkey, Vol. 1, pp. 497-505

This paper deals with the ultimate vertical capacity of double hull tankers designed according to the new Common Structural Rules. The ultimate capacity is calculated for three tankers with different structural configurations. The strength is calculated based on the net scantlings + 50% of the corrosion addition as defined in the new IACS Common Structural Rules. A computer code has been developed using the progressive collapse method and applying the stress strain curves defined in the Common Structural Rules. The validity of the program is checked by comparing its results with the ones of an experiment of pure bending of box girder. Finally, a design equation is proposed to calculate the ultimate capacity of double hull tankers. The validity of the equation is checked by comparing its results with other researchers’ results. The same code was used to calculate the residual strength of damaged tankers. A simple formula is proposed to estimate the loss in ultimate capacity when the ship’s bottom is damaged.
